What Are Open Graph Tags?
Open Graph (OG) is a protocol originally created by Facebook in 2010 that turns any web page into a rich object in a social graph. When you share a URL on Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Discord, or other platforms, they look for Open Graph meta tags in your HTML to determine what title, description, and image to display in the sharing card.
The four essential OG tags are og:title, og:description, og:image, and og:url. Together, these tell social platforms exactly how to present your content. Additional tags like og:type, og:site_name, and og:locale provide further context about your page's content type, your brand name, and the language of your content.
While Facebook created the protocol, it has since been adopted as the de facto standard across virtually all social platforms. Twitter/X developed their own Twitter Card system but will fall back to OG tags when Twitter-specific tags aren't present. LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Slack, Discord, Telegram, and iMessage all rely on OG tags to render link previews. Getting your OG tags right is one of the highest-impact, lowest-effort optimisations you can make for social media marketing.
Why Open Graph Tags Matter
Every time someone shares a link to your website, the receiving platform creates a visual preview card. Without Open Graph tags, these platforms guess what to display — often pulling the wrong image, a truncated title, or a description that doesn't represent your content. The result is a link that looks unprofessional and gets fewer clicks.
Well-configured OG tags give you complete control over this first impression. A compelling title, relevant description, and eye-catching image can dramatically increase click-through rates from social media shares. Studies have shown that posts with optimised social cards receive significantly more engagement than those with generic or broken previews.
Beyond clicks, consistent social sharing cards reinforce brand recognition. When your logo, brand colours, and messaging appear consistently across every platform, it builds trust and professionalism. This is especially important for businesses where social proof and brand perception directly impact conversions.
